PORTFOLIO

With 2 decades of work experience under my belt, the following projects are merely a small sample of the successful client engagements that have been completed.  If you have a challenge and can't find something like it among the following, let me know and I can tell you more about projects I have completed that are analogous to your particular challenges.

PROJECT 4: Air Force Purchasing, Inventory, and Manpower Database

Background

An Air Force client had been working with a split Microsoft Access database with the back-end of the database stored on a network drive.  After continuous disruptions and data corruptions, they sought out a fix to their database.  After an initial assessment, it was deemed better to replace the database with a new, more stable, and more functional database while also transferring as much of the old data as possible from the old database.

Challenge

  • The client's existing PARTS database was built upon an old MS Access 2003 platform

    • Unstable network drive resulted in interrupted access

    • Database corruptions resulted in loss of data

  • The PARTS database was a vendor-supplied proprietary solution that was not customized to the client's operational environment

  • The proprietary security prevented any modifications of forms and functionality to match evolving client business processes

  • Database lacked any valuable quantitative metrics

  • Database was missing integration with other valuable data sources (e.g., tracking labor hours, project financials, etc.)

Solution

3 screenshots seen at left.  Solution named tongue-in-cheek as "WORKS" because it actually works (compared to the old database).  Consists of an entirely new Microsoft Access database with a SQL Server back end.  Details:

  • Integrity and performance of having a SQL Server back end for data tables and cached views

  • User Interfaces and functionality are exactly what the client needed and matches their terminology and processes.

  • Capable of providing valuable performance metrics

  • Contains a Manpower module for tracking labor hours against specific Work Orders

  • Integrates with project financial data

  • Handles logistics and supports physical inventory checks

  • When running on a tablet with a barcode scanner, can scan labels and quickly bring the user to the Inventory Part Details or Work Order Details forms

Results

The client was so pleased with the database that a follow-on engagement was awarded for additional development.  All client contract performance evaluations were rated as "Exceptional".
